How to Switch from Push-Button to Open-Face Reels

Most of us probably started fishing with push button reels. Their simplicity made them excellent choices for learning to cast a line. Just hold the button down with your thumb, then let it go to release the line during a cast. Nothing to it.

Eventually, you realize you need a reel with more capability and greater line capacity. Spinning reels are excellent choices. The problem though for many people is making the adjustment from using their thumbs to control the line, to using their forefingers to control the line during a cast. The tendency for most people is to release too late and the lure goes zinging off to the left (for a right-handed person).

Fortunately, there's a simple solution to this problem: Use your thumb!

You can cast your spinning reel just like you did a push-button reel. Here's how.

Pull the line up from the spool and trap it under your thumb as shown below:

Next, flip the bail over.

Now all you need do is release the line with your thumb during the casting stroke just as you used to release the button.
