Shooting at targets on conventional backstops at the outdoor ranges can become routine and a little boring. You can liven up your practice sessions with the use of a few free-standing target stands.

You can place targets on the stands and use them in more-or-less the conventional way, or you can mix "good guy" and "bad guy" targets, or you can use them as barricades to shoot around. The exercises/scenarios possible is only limited by your imagination.

Most of the target stands I’ve seen use wooden furring strips
for the upright sections, set into steel bases. They’re sturdy. They’re also a
bit on the heavy side, bulky, and not very portable
A simpler, cheaper stand can be made from PVC pipe and fittings. I made the stands pictured on this page in about an hour. They’re light weight, easy to take apart for transport, and cheap enough that you could make several for the price of just 1 wooden/steel stand.
I used 10-foot lengths of 3/4-inch, schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings to match, for my stands.
